I will continue a grungy delve into 90’s alt rock.

After my mixed feelings about Pearl Jam yesterday I decided I would today go with a contemporary of theirs but one that I think I will like. I picked Soundgarden because I know I don’t hate the sound of Cornell’s voice, I enjoyed Audioslave. Also am somewhat familiar with the song Black Hole Sun and don’t hate it.

Let Me Drown

A song about wanting to die…

My Wave

I am a bit relieved that this doesn’t appear to be a song about death or wanting to die. I remember when Cornell committed suicide and was a worried after Let Me Drown this was going to be an album idolizing death many years before he passed.

Fell On Black Days

So it appears that this album will remind me of Audioslave. I really like this song, it sounds like Cornell is singing about his struggles with depression and anxieties, but appears to be self aware in this one.

Mailman

A song about sending a message to someone who disrespects you, elevating yourself above them. I wonder if the title has anything to do with the phrase “going postal” which I believe is related to mailmen killing their bosses.

Superunknown

I suspect this could be about drug addiction.

Head Down

The narrator seems to be a group that is controlling the subject or society, beating down all happiness the subject has.

Black Hole Sun

I like this song, not sure what it’s about, the lyrics seem to tell about feelings of being inadequate and not being able to get by without stepping on others.

Spoonman

I didn’t realize I had heard this one before. When typing the song titles I thought this one might be about heroin, but reading the lyrics I think this is about someone who plays the musical spoons really well.

Limo Wreck

I’ve never heard this one before, but I really like it. It’s a reminder that everyone has an undoing.

The Day I Tried To Live

I am going to interpret this as a anthem against depression, yes I am reading a lot of that into this listening experience and I could be all wrong

Kickstand

Sounds like a Nirvana song.

Fresh Tendrils

Perhaps this song tells about the narrator trying to change himself?

4th Of July

Layers of voices is something I don’t recall before. This is also a lot more like stoner rock than I expected, heavy bass drones with lots of distortion.

Half

What the fuck? I don’t know. Free form sitar? Some weird psyche stuff.

Like Suicide

This is about a bird. This is some impressive songwriting. The way that this bird’s death inspired is frankly amazing.

Well that was not what I had expected

I enjoyed it but was expecting something less technical. The soundscapes were purposefully crafted here and the timing of the songs was actually complex.
