I came across a thread that Cola Boyy had died

This past Sunday Cola Boyy died at 34 years old. He called himself a “disabled disco innovator”. After reading the headline and coming to an understanding that “disabled disco” isn’t a genre of music rather Matthew Urango aka Cola Boyy was disabled at birth and still pursued his dreams. I figured that I would listen to the album of his that has been released.

Note: These notes and my notes for the next few weeks may be a bit different on some days. We are doing a fitness challenge at work and I am planning on listening while walking. I will try to delve into song meanings as they strike me and will try to highlight things I like from each album but it may be less detailed than normal.

Don’t Forget Your Neighborhood

This is a pop dance song about remembering your roots and where you came from.

Mailbox (feat. John Carroll Kirby & JGrrey)

Funky dance pop stuff again, it’s fun.

Song for the Mister (feat. Nicolas Godin)

I fully expected this song to have a spoken word section (which it kinda did) and a rap (which it didn’t)

Roses (feat. Myd)

This seems uninspired and auto tune appears to be doing most of the melodic heavy lifting. The guy’s voice isn’t bad and he does have some dynamic range, I feel this would be improved by him writing the song for his vocal range instead of relying on effects in post.

For the Last Time

I like the way the keys and drums drive the song forward and create dynamics.

You Can Do It (feat. nit)

It’s unremarkable and it’s disco.

Mink

I didn’t find this one interesting enough to write down any notes for it.

One of These Winters Will Take Me (feat. Bon Voyage Organisation)

I liked this one, it was almost psychedelic sounding at times.

Go the Mile (feat. infinite bisous)

I decided to listen to this one again as I was intrigued by it. I think this is a song about the Cola Boyy’s disability and having some dreams and wants tempered because he wasn’t physically able to perform.

Kid Born in Space (feat. Andrew VanWyngarden)

A song about growing up disabled and what he felt in his youth.

Will I listen to the posthumous album that is likely to be released?

Honestly? Probably. Not because I think this is great music but because I think there was enough magic in a few of the songs that I am intrigued to see what he produced before passing. The last 3 songs on the album I felt were the best.
