Did you know I enjoy listening to random music?

Ever since I was a kid I have had a hard time just listening to one type of music and often times have found myself listening to just a short snip of tracks before skipping to the next track or a completely different artist all together. I remember having MP3 CDs with a few hundred songs. I would put them on random and spend hours listening to songs start, sometimes finishing a song but usually pressing “next”. I don’t know what this has to do with this album but somehow it justifies listening to this which I know nothing about but thought the album title sounded cool because the local amusement park had a Days of Thunder ride based on the NASCAR themed movie when I was young. I didn’t look anything up about this band and don’t have any clue what to expect. I’m gonna press play now.

The Years (Prologue)

A lot of synth. Very deliberate vocals. Arpeggios in the vocals, interesting. The lyrics tell about memories of a summer love. Perhaps this album will be a recollection of that summer? This song goes almost four and a half minutes without percussion, not that it’s important but something I noticed.

Gloria

I know a song called Gloria by The Lumineers. I doubt this is related at all. So the lyrics tell of a person who appears to be caught in a spiral of destruction. Getting high to the point of not being able to stand and doing reckless things while driving. But Gloria seems to be the narrator’s release from this destructiveness, he sings that he just feels better today. Perhaps Gloria is the spark that the narrator needed to pull himself out of the cycle he was stuck in.

WeMoveForward

Firmly in the realm of synthwave or synthpop I would say. I am not sure if there are any non-synth instruments on this album at this point. Strictly speaking this is not a bad thing. I like synths a lot, I carry one with me most places just in case I need it. They are super versatile and really well used in this one. This song is again about a woman giving the narrator inspiration to move forward in life and becoming his muse.

Days of Thunder

Foley of rain and starting a car. We might get a NASCAR song? Unlikely, the narrator talked about liking to drive fast and being reckless. The sax before the chorus might be a sample and not a synth, some of the drums could also be samples but I am not sure that anyone is actually playing a kit on this album. Our narrator seems a bit upset in this one, almost scorned. I wonder if Gloria has left him? He laments about love and how it is upsetting. He misses the past.

Kick Drums & Red Wine

I had to wait longer than anticipated to hear a kick drum on this one. I am struggling with a message or meaning for this song. It seems like everyone has their own preferences, good and bad. I do like the dance beat over the course of the song.

Los Angeles

I think this is the present day, the band is in LA. Their journey here hasn’t been without peril and risk.

Memories

This is what this album makes me think of. This is a debut album to my knowledge. I think this album is a story of the band before the present. I am a bit curious as to their newer releases to see what has become of this synth driven band.
