I recently discovered…

The Flaming Lips released a cover album of Dark Side of the Moon. They released it with this band. I tried to stream it but it’s missing several songs so the CD is literally waiting for me to open the Amazon package. However I am not going to choose to listen to covers of some album I have heard countless times. Instead why not check out the lesser known band and see what their stuff sounds like. Now I did listen to some of Dark Side that was available for streaming and I am somewhat familiar with The Flaming Lips so perhaps I know some of what I am in for?

The Sea Is On Fire

Contemplation and self reflection. The lyrics are comparing the narrator to an observer. It could also be that I am relating the band to the Flaming Lips but I think this may be talking about tripping, trying to explain a psychedelic experience to someone without any firsthand knowledge or experience.  That person passes judgment upon the narrator and the retort being that the narrator seems to be having fun, unlike the observer.

New Heat

This one is jaunty. There is a lot going on here musically. I think the lyrics seem to be describing taking too much of a psychedelic substance, realizing that they have and trying to control the experience.

Keep Score

This is more of a pop song I think. It’s a song about the loss of a relationship due to pettiness.

The Birth

This is weird, a good heavy weird, but weird. I would like to think the echoing of “I know” is a homage to Ain’t No Sunshine by Bill Withers.

Those Who Are From The Sun Return To The Sun

The previous song spills into this one. The bass is fun and highlighted.

I Can’t Get Away

Fat square waves sound great. The lyrics seem to be singing about being delightfully pussy whipped.

The Age Of The Freak

More guitar in this one, and growling bass. The band likes effects and feedback. Almost calling forth all “freaks” but then revealing that any perceived “age of [fill in blank]” is just an attitude.

Country Ballad

A song about growing older and understanding that perceptions change with time. Other things change with time too, like relationships. The song just ends.

The March

I have no idea what this one is about. Perhaps some sort of space bandit, 1 million miles from the sun and being on the run?

Smoking Pot Makes Me Not Want To Kill Myself

Seems to be talking about being in a relationship and being worried that it’s pointless.

It’s like Flaming Lips lite

A lot of reflection about the ending of relationships. The album is very derivative of what I’ve heard from the Flaming Lips. Very experimental. I actually really liked this and would like to hear more but it looks like the discog is fairly empty.
