Thoughts on Art
I have none, I think I learned about this band a week ago, and did you look at that cover it looks so cool. So this will be an adventure.
I think I'm Going Weird
The first, non-instrumental, song I’ve listened to with this project that I cannot locate lyrics to. Strange, err, weird. This is a lot more active and full than the late 60’s psychedelic music I am used to. It appears to tell about getting really high and being worried you aren’t going to come down.
What's That Sound (For What It's Worth)
Alright, it appears this is obscure enough that I don’t deserve to read lyrics. This is a cover of Buffalo Springfield’s For What it’s Worth, it’s more full than the original but a decidedly different take. I do like the reaction of the guitar to the lyrics.
African Thing
Alright this one is clearly experimental. It’s a 4 minute song with the last 3 minutes being a percussion solo. Interesting and unexpected. The lyrics tell a short tale of a lonely man who has lost the will to live. He is unaffected when he finds out his wife has perished.
Room with a View
Well this one sounds neat to start off. A gated chord. The whole song music is very fun to listen to. The lyrics tell about learning through experience. From what I can understand at least.
Flying Anchors
The song is in 6/8 it would appear and sounds disconcerting.I am struggling to understand the lyrics which makes an interpretation difficult. The narrator is talking about sitting by a stream and dreaming about life being sweet. He notes that people come by and say thing or judge him but he doesn’t care. I think this could be about drug use. With dreaming either being an metaphor for tripping to nodding off.
Supernatural Fairy Tale
Much more upbeat. The soundscape is much more what I anticipated when thinking of the album and the time. The lyrics seem to be describing a gypsy fortune teller doing her job and doing readings. I can’t tell if the narrator is suspicious of the fortune teller. He asks for a reading. The song changes tone greatly. The effects used get heavy and I can’t decipher the lyrics for parts of the song again. The song then discusses trying to run from fate and being unable to escape.
Love Is Real
A more laid back song. I like how they have the different voices in the chorus echoing each other. The song describes the feeling of love and longing. It explores what love means. The end of the song goes to a march type song, I am not sure what that symbolizes.
Come on Up
This could be a bluesy rock song if it wasn’t for some of the instrumental choices.
Brothers, Dads and Mothers
The lack of the Oxford comma annoys me. I really like the way this song sounds but I can’t understand most the words. I think part of my issue with comprehension is due to the phrasing and where they are choosing to put accents. One lyric I can make out is “This is a very funny happening”
Talkin' to Myself
This song again has phrases that are oddly worded. But it describes the feeling that everyone is acting odd around you and feeling outcast.
Alive Not Dead
I again here more of an early rock and roll vibe that I think comes from the band originating as a blues outfit.
Rome Take Away Three
The final song appears to be a song about a breakup with a lover who was unfaithful.
Is this art?
This was very frustrating for me. I much prefer to be able to read the lyrics when listening if I am trying to understand lyrics. This sounds amazing (aside for an extended percussion solo that didn’t change much). Choices were made to make the lyrics work better with the music however when trying to interpreter it’s hard to decipher. I will revisit parts of this album but for leisure not analysis.
