At some point when I was a child my parents felt the need for faith in our lives. After a brief trail of various religious establishments we ended up at what I can only describe as a hippie church. I attended it for a little more than a decade starting when I was maybe 6 or 7. It really did shape a lot of me growing up, which may be apparent. Anyways one of the youth advisors, a husband/wife pair, was my introduction to Rage Against The Machine. It was never something that I really enjoyed. And when I think of hippie music it’s actually what I think of. I also think it is what really influenced Kid Rock. I wasn’t exactly looking forward to this listen because I don’t remember really enjoying the music.
I started listening when I left the house after work to pick up my daughter from school. I was surprised that I actually remembered several of these songs. These are protest songs. Most are very repetitive and are very pointed. I imagine this is the music that the current US political right is afraid of. I listened to the second half of the album while mowing my front yard, the style of music actually pairs well with the physical labor required to operate a bush hog. So I did actually like this album. I am not sure if I will listen to it again as I have heard the first few songs before and I don’t really enjoy them, I may however explore their catalog a bit more.
