I was introduced to this band yesterday

After hearing my appreciation of Hole yesterday someone suggested this. I’ve already listened to most of the album while doing errands this morning. It’s much better than Hole, as most things are. This will be a more close listen.

Sponge

This does seem to fit pretty nicely with my current grunge week, it’s a little newer than most grunge music but it has the feel. I am not overly fond of the mixing, I struggle to hear the lyrics. The narrator is reflecting upon his life, realizing that he isn’t able to live in the current, he has a lot of baggage and regret  yet he is still singing his devotion to his partner.

Life In A Jar

Lots of sounds to start. Not all overtly musical sounds, great atmospheric effect. The lyrics seem to tell about missing someone, a partner perhaps, unclear if they passed or left the narrator. In the second verse there it mentions feeling guilty and being clean. Makes me think that the partner either left due to the narrator’s drug use or overdosed and the narrator has survivor’s guilt.

Outside Of Me

This song seems to be an apology to someone for becoming involved in their life and causing turmoil.

Sheltered

The album drifts further from grunge sounds to more pop punk sounds. It’s a bit heavier than what I anticipate with pop punk. The song is a lament of existence because a (former?) partner.

Crawl

Perhaps pop punk isn’t the best way to describe this. It reminds me a lot of the screaming emo music that was popular in the mid 2000’s when I was an older teen. This song appears to be about dealing with a toxic relationship.

Last October

I enjoy the intro. Lyrically the song seems to be about dealing with mental health issues and feelings of inadequacies. There is a guitar solo.

Youngest Daughter

The content of the rest of the album makes me think this isn’t a father writing this for his daughter but perhaps a brother writing for his youngest sister. But the woman has fallen into the grasp of addiction. The song tells about the feelings felt by the family member watching a loved one decay in a self destructive spiral. I personally think this is the most powerful song on the album.

Knew

Back to a pop punk feel. The song seems to tell about issues with communication in a relationship.

No One’s Deserving

Perhaps another song that explores the toxic relationship we first heard about in Crawl.

Hole In The Ground

Completely different feel on this one. Clean guitar that isn’t distorted?! The song is sad, it tells about the narrator’s mother dying by her own hands. The narrator had left her for whatever reasons and she became suicidal and end her life.

In On It

Back to the more pop punk feel. This is about being there for someone.

Around The Railing

A song for the narrator’s sister. I think this may be the same person as the subject in Youngest Daughter. The narrator sings dedications and wants to save his sister’s life.

I don’t know how to define it

Somewhere in a mix between stoner rock, grunge and pop punk. The songs felt heartfelt and not overly produced or ghostwritten which was really nice, but often dark. I probably will check out their second album too.
