Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
My day was a bit rough. I started today trying to listen to a Gary Newman album. It reminded me of kids movies. I was having a hard time getting into it and then my day just went downhill. I spent most of my day without music and I wanted something that I thought I would like and would be easy to listen to for my album after work. This was an album recommended to me and I’ve heard The Boys Are Back In Town before; it’s a fun song. So why don’t I try this album out?
Track List:
Jailbreak
Angel From The Coast
Running Back
Romeo And The Lonely Girl
Warriors
The Boys Are Back In Town
Fight Or Fall
Cowboy Song
Emerald
Songs I have heard before this listening:
The Boys are Back in Town
Jailbreak - I’ve heard this, I knew how the lyrics went but it was performed by someone else.
Other artists this reminds me of:
Tom Petty - Delivery of lyrics
Jimi Hendrix - Warrior sounds like it was heavily inspired by his music.
Ocean Alley - The start of Fight or fall sounds like their brand of psychedelic surf rock.
Rush - The lyrics for several songs I could see being inspired or inspiring Rush.
Notes on individual Songs
Jailbreak
The album starts with a bang. It sounds very similar to what I expected having heard a single song on it before.
Angel From The Coast
There is a jam section here that I wish had been expanded upon, for like 15 minutes. I like that they highlight the drums too with the solos.
Romeo and the Lonely Girl
They really made a song to basically say “Don’t stick your dick in crazy.”
Warriors
This is the first song with a substantial intro and build up. And then they borrowed Hendrix’s voice and the solos are fantastic. But wow it’s short. I feel like it could be 3 times as long and that would be better. It’s also got mythology references, references to stardom, what I suppose you could call an epic tale…
Fight or Fall
“Telling myself
Telling myself
Telling myself
That I’m…”
They did that and it was cool. We get a similar tone as Warriors.
Cowboy Song
The lyrics seem odd compared to the music. I could see the lyrics being pop country song lyrics. It’s a song about longing to be in a rodeo…I think it was an excuse to play a solo. I would be interested in hearing a cover by a band like The Frog Brigade.
Emerald
I think parts of this song are based on the battle hymn of the republic, or at least I hear parts of them together. It's weird. Listening to the lyrics sounds like a Rush song but sung a few octaves too low.
Notes on the music:
I’d call this overall a strange album. The instrumentation is very consistent and it would be really cool to watch played live with solo sections expanded upon. Parts of the album are nearing prog rock while others are prototypes for the pop punk that became so popular in the late 90’s and early 00’s. There are also very psychedelic parts with the hazy guitar parts that fall somewhere between highly technical solos and surf rock.
