The last Rush album
For almost the entirety of the Rush catalog I’ve been able to understand how the band evolved and changed from each album to the next. I do think that the opinion I formed while listening to Presto still holds true. Rush was a reactive band. They were a “Progressive Pop” trio. They didn’t set out to come up with innovative new sounds to make musical, sometimes they did this but I don’t believe that was their intent. They took the sounds that were being used in popular music at the time then they wrote and developed compositions using this. A lot of the times it works and is either fine or amazing, a few times it really fails (Roll the Bones).
I am also aware of time gaps in music that I am familiarity with. Specifically I haven’t listened to a lot of music released from the mid 80’s to the mid 90’s. It could be that music produced in the first decade of my life hasn’t drawn me in, I am not sure. I’ve tried to listen to albums released in this period of time (over 50 so far this year) but growing up I heard music from the mid 60’s to the early 80’s most often. I found this interesting, as I felt that the Rush albums released in the same period of time were the ones I enjoyed the least. I would say the albums I enjoyed the most were the earlier ones, starting with “Fly by Night”. I felt the band ended their career with a highlight. I am not sure if “Clockwork Angels” was planned to be the last album.
