Is the only song by Joni Mitchell I can recall. It’s not on this album but I am expecting something along those lines. Folk and acoustic.
All I Want
That was interesting. She seems to be laying out what her dreams and expectations are. I really liked the drone plucked over the course of the song, it sounds like what I associate with a zither.
My Old Man
Just piano and her voice. She has an amazing voice and can use the high and the low ends effectively. She is singing about her partner how much she adores him and how she feels sad when he is not around.
Little Green
Guitar and her singing. This is sad. It’s a story of a young woman choosing to give up a child for adoption, not because she doesn’t want the child but because she realizes she cannot support the child and wants what is best for them.
Carey
A fuller sounding band on this one. So Carey is perhaps a man she met while in a resort location like Ibeza or someplace like that. She is having fun with him and their fling.
Blue
Piano. It’s a hippie breakup song. She is wanting more than the hippie lifestyle of disconnection from reality.
California
She sings of being homesick while traveling in Europe. I really like the way that the song dances at different paces throughout. The tempo doesn’t change but her urgency does, it gives a neat effect.
This Flight Tonight
This one also has the neat pacing from the previous song but not to the same degree. It sounds like she just broke up with someone and then flew away and started having regrets. Damn she sampled!
River
Variations on Jingle Bells. I’ve heard this song before. A song about breaking up with someone just before the holidays.
A Case of You
It’s a story of falling in love. She is calling the love intoxicating. Very pretty song.
The Last Time I Saw Richard
She sings about the last time she saw someone and how his life has changed over time.
The endings!
That’s what this album is about, endings. Relationships ending for various reasons and of various types. The emotions that a person has upon coming to terms with the end of something they had dedicated their time and effort to. This was a really good album.
