Rush
Rush is why I chose this. I came across this video of Anthem being covered. A member of Mutoid Man was one of the guys doing this cover. I enjoyed the cover so I figured I would check out some of the bands involved. Then I thought listening to a Primus album would be against the spirit of this project, so I looked at the cover art and Mutoid Man looked cool. Sometimes life seems oh so simple. I have no clue what to expect.
Bridgeburner
A breakup song, appears it isn’t a romantic breakup but perhaps a band? It’s one group ousting a single person.
Reptilian Soul
So this is a departure to what I would normally prefer to listen to. Much heavier, a lot of things that remind me of Megadeth and Iron Maiden, but that could be because it’s my point of reference for heavy metal.
Sweet Ivy
The drums accent a weird time signature thing. This is fun to listen to. The lyrics could be interpreted to be talking about addiction.
1000 Mile Stare
This song begins to have some of the way I expected the vocals to sound, a thrash rock growl. I interpret the lyrics to be talking to a friend who either burned out on drugs or has been taking depression medication and is just existing currently.
Surveillance
An alerting call to a world so interconnected and under the watchful eye of the powers that be… The song is again fun to listen to.
Beast
The way this song starts reminds me of Beavis and Butthead episodes from my youth. It’s again catchy and fun to listen to, the lyrics describe a couple being vulnerable with one another and how it changes the narrator’s view of the other and the narrator embraces the other in hopes of building it up.
Dead Dreams
A song hoping to inspire folks to not give up on dreams and to do what they can to be successful. The second half vocals are different from the rest of the album thus far and I don’t really enjoy them.
Soft Spot In My Skull
A song where a fly infestation in the narrator’s skull leads to a theme of mind control.
Deadlock
A social commentary about the modern world. I really like the decay of the guitar’s distortion, it reminds me of the end of the song Kinderfeld by Marilyn Manson.
Bleeder
A goodbye. I do like how gritty this song is.
Well it isn’t Rush
And I didn’t really expect it to be. It’s probably thrash metal or some derivative of it. I hear a lot of Megadeth and Anthrax here, but also more industrial sounds. It’s almost like heavy metal flavored punk rock with the brevity of the songs. However I do think equating this to punk rock is likely doing a disservice to the complexity of the songs. Overall I will probably listen again when driving or working to have background noise. I will also likely check out their other albums.
