My first experience with this brand of musical royalty
I think I’ve heard Purple Rain and When Doves Cry and saw a video of Prince shredding on guitar at the rock and roll hall of fame but I’ve never actively listened to any song by Prince. I recall when he passed everyone held him in high regards. From what I can recall from seeing him the rock and roll hall of fame solo was nothing short of absolutely amazing so I suppose I have some decently high expectations of this album.
1999
This didn’t start the way I expected. The keys and beat is fantastically 80’s. So the song tells a story of a world in the future year of 2000 where there have been catastrophic apocalyptical events and the song encourages the listener to live in the now and party since tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.
Little Red Corvette
A one night stand with a hotrod?
Delirious
The lead synth on this one is fun. It dances with the rest of the music. More sensual car references. The baby at the end O.o
Let’s Pretend We’re Married
Almost an industrial feel but the sounds are wrong. Feels like a drum machine. Well currently my impression of Prince is that he was quite a horny individual.
D.M.S.R
Funky synths. So I suppose that this hypothetical post apocalyptic world is also very sex positive.
Automatic
It sounds like this one he is singing to a woman he wants to bed and getting more and more desperate over the course of the song. I enjoy the use of effects over the course of the song. I’ve never heard a guitar solo being drowned by moans or cries of women before. Interesting.
Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)
Very heavy with drum machines and synths. Again I feel like this could be industrial, lots of things the same. He is contemplating his relationships and wondering why he feels mistreated by his partners.
Free
Okay, I think this is the first song on the album that isn’t about trying to get laid or dealing with the repercussions of getting laid, not children but relationships and feelings and shit. Seems to be a song about being grateful for what you are.
Lady Cab Driver
This is like reverse Taxi by Harry Chapin? Guessing this before listening. Funky. So it does appear this is a song about having sex with a female cab driver. The guitar solo is neat. I was thinking there would be more on the album as a whole, instead it was a lot more synths than I expected.
All The Critics Love U In New York
I like the way this song is connected to the last song. Again more synths and drum machines. The song seems to me to have dual meanings. The first being success being a musician and dealing with success and feeling on top of the world. But the second being that feeling that he must act specific ways to avoid falling out of the grace of the credits. He actually calls out other genres of music.
International Lover
A song about flaunting wealth to pick up someone. This one seems to be knowingly over the top.
Well…
That wasn’t the most enjoyable experience for me. I honestly don’t prefer songs that are completely sex crazed. I think the overall theme of the album was set in the initial song which is also the title track. The album is about a world that is on the brink of ending and everyone is giving into their carnal desires. I did enjoy how much this sounded like industrial music to me. It’s the heavy use of drum machines and using them in different meters overlapping. Towards the end of the album I had a thought that perhaps some of this is tongue in cheek, if so I think I would be a bit more forgiving but I don’t foresee myself listening to this album again. That being said the man was an incredible musician, this just isn’t my jam.
